Tanzania: 8 Days Lemosho Down Mweka

The Lemosho route approaches the mountain from the west and is used by very few trekkers making it one of the secluded routes on Kilimanjaro. The first couple of days through the rain forest gives the climbers an extremely exciting experience with possibilities of seeing wildlife. Lemosho is a difficult route, but the added days on the lower slopes of the mountain make this an ideal route for altitude acclimatization.

Lemosho is probably the most varied and most beautiful scenically as it ascends through the rainforest, crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau, and also visits the great Barranco wal and Lava Toweron the Machame route.

Trekkers confident of their fitness and enjoy camping out for long periods without fatigue, this route offers the greatest adventure variation thus the ideal choice for them. It is also recommended for those who value proper altitude acclimatization and looking for a lesser travelled route.

Tanzania: Machame Out Mweka / Tusker Route

The Machame route is arguably the most scenic and probably the most beautiful route by which to ascend the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro.  The trek begins in the south-west area of the mountain at Machame Gate and descends down Mweka, on the south-east side of the mountain thus offering climbers the most varied scenery of Kilimanjaro. Additionally, Machame visits stunning places such as Shira Plateau, Barranco, and Lava Tower.

Machame route is known as the “Whiskey Route” in comparison to Marangu because it is a more difficult route and trekkers sleep in camping tents as opposed to huts. Machame is the second most popular route on the mountain.

Nights are spent in ‘mountain tents’ sleeping two persons per tent (3 man tents, so there is space for your luggage).  All your supplies and camping equipment are carried by porters and your meals are prepared.

Machame is ideal for those who want a more difficult climb, and are confident in their ability to hike for long periods of time over somewhat steep terrain. The route takes six days minimum to complete, although seven days is recommended to increase the chances of summiting. The descent is down Mweka, on the south-east side of the mountain.

    Tanzania: Marangu Out Marangu Route

Marangu route also known as ‘Coca-Cola’ route is the most popular thus a high-traffic route on Kilimanjaro. It is the only non-camping route on Kilimanjaro where trekkers sleep in dormitory-like huts. Marangu is mistakeably considered as the easiest route and due to this reputation, it is often selected by many unprepared and inexperienced trekkers. As a result, only a migre 35% of climbers using this route actually make it to the summit at Uhuru peak. Scenically, Marangu route has great views of the rain forest, Mawenzi peak, and the landscape below as well as the magnificient vista from the summit.

Marangu route is ideal for those who are not confident in their ability to hike over steeper paths and are not comfortable sleeping under a tent. The route takes five days minimum to complete, although six days is more practical and recommended.
